Mark Twain was a wise man. So, are you saying I’ve got to work out what will be of value to the marketplace? Does that apply to writing fiction? I’d be interested to hear what other writers think about that. I think that, usually the process is so slow that if you wrote according to the latest interests, by the time the book is out the fad may have changed. I have to write the story that’s nagging me the most. However, I do need to notice the “style” that’s currently fashionable. There’s no point writing today like Charles Dickens (not that I ever could); he’s a master, but no one writes (or talks) like that now. What do the rest of you think?
