Last night, a long-awaited dream came true. I attended my own book launch. Or, I should say, books launch. I'd waited so long, I figured I might as well kick off with two.

It wasn't a good date to hold it: lots of people couldn't come because of end of school proceedings, or early Christmas celebrations, or travel plans, or illness. I expected about 30 would come along and I'd have been happy with that. Instead, about 80 people attended the launch! I was overwhelmed.

So many people, seemingly quite delighted on my behalf, clutching copies for me to sign. Amazing. Some even brought a present! A present! I've got to lift my game. I've never given a present to any of my author friends!

The two guest speakers were wonderful. Dr Rosanne Hawke (well-respected Aussie children's author) said wonderful things about the books. I hadn't realised I'd done such a good job!  Rev Dr Lynn Arnold (former State Premier; former Director of World Vision Aust; former Director of Anglicare SA, and a Reconciliation Australia Ambassador) spoke about the plight of child soldiers, eloquently and compassionately. He also said some generous and affirming things about my writing.  It was a humbling experience.

I'm still a bit disappointed that book launches don't entail smashing a champagne bottle against the book before launching it across the room. I think that'd be spectacular. But, I got to shove a knife into a fabulous cake, while the crowd sang, "Happy book launch to you..." Hahaaa

So many people, were willing and cheerful helpers. A writer friend worked on the sales table with my son and husband. Another friend brought extra food for the supper, without being asked. A talented friend made the amazing cake: three books stacked one on top of the other, with a dragon sleeping on top. Her daughter helped hand out the cake, which my sisters had helped cut up. So many people being kind and thoughtful.

And, so many happy, loving faces beaming at me as I signed their copies. It was like a family reunion. My only regret is that I couldn't spend more time chatting to you all, individually.

Thank you, everyone, for making it a dream come true with bells and cherries on top.

For those of you who couldn't make it, don't worry. According to my publisher, I'm writing a third book in the series, so you can come to that launch. Maybe, at that one, I'll get to do the champagne smashing thing. At least I've got nearly a year to figure out how to go one better than last night. Maybe a live band? Or, a live dragon?
